Retzke: The 89th District Deserves Better Than Recycled Political Scandals

SANDUSKY, Ohio — Reports that a convicted felon with a long history of political scandal is being considered as a potential candidate for Ohio’s 89th House District should concern voters across Erie, Ottawa, and Huron counties.
Whether or not those reports ultimately result in a nomination, the fact that such a possibility is being seriously discussed raises important questions about the direction of local Republican leadership and the standards voters should expect from those seeking public office.
“Public office is a privilege, not an entitlement,” said Democratic nominee Easton Retzke. “When someone has violated the public’s trust through unethical conduct and criminal convictions, voters have every right to expect better from those asking to represent them.”
The developments come just days after State Representative D.J. Swearingen withdrew from the race, prompting local Republican Party officials to begin selecting a replacement nominee outside of the primary process. As that process continues, discussion has expanded to include individuals whose previous time in office was overshadowed by scandal and criminal convictions.
“Instead of looking forward with new leadership and fresh ideas, the conversation continues to center on political insiders and familiar names,” Retzke said. “The people of the 89th District deserve leaders who have earned the public’s trust, not politicians seeking another opportunity after breaking it.”
Retzke emphasized that the upcoming election should remain focused on the issues facing local communities rather than political drama.
“Our families are worried about rising costs, the future of our public schools, protecting Lake Erie, supporting good-paying jobs, and ensuring state government is transparent and accountable,” Retzke said. “Those are the conversations we should be having. The people of Erie, Ottawa, and Huron counties deserve leaders who wake up every day focused on serving their communities, not on political maneuvering.”
Retzke concluded by reaffirming his commitment to running a campaign centered on integrity, accountability, and solutions for working families.
